After a little break over the winter months. One of the brightest rising stars on the UK metal scene, Defects are back once again. Coming out swinging with their brand new single, Artificial Icons.
The band’s first new material since 2025’s single, Heresy. Which whipped mosh pits into action all over Europe during a storming run of festival appearances. Artificial Icons sounds absolutely ferocious too. Packing the same kind of riff focused savagery that made their debut album, Modern Error shine. As well as a chorus that sinks its hooks in deep and refuses to let go.
Given the chaotic political climate the world finds itself in currently. The lyrics on Defects latest track hold some real significance as well. “Look around. I wanted to write a song that pushes you to think outside the box. I was faced with religious teachings when I was younger. I felt fear, I felt rage, and I wanted to fight back. Believe in what you choose, not in what others force on you for their own agendas, profit or control” says vocalist Tony Maue.
Fans of the band might notice some new faces in Defects current line-up. With guitarist Luke Genders, drummer Harry Jennings and bassist David Silver having left the group in Autumn last year to focus on life away from the stage. Co-writing new music with the bands remaining members, Tony Maue and James Threadwell as a parting gift. Leaving a lasting legacy behind them.
While their departure was a bittersweet moment for all involved. Defects look poised to enter 2026 renewed and rearmed. With new members Taylor Brown and Rowan Jack adding fresh fuel to the fire that has powered the band to where they are today. Refocused and ready to step into the limelight once more, we can only hope a new album isn’t too far away on the horizon!
Artificial Icons is available to stream now via Mascot Records. For more information on Defects, you can head over to the bands official website. Or give them a follow on social media to keep yourself up to date on any new announcements.
